There
are two basic types of self adhesive tapes:
single sided, and double sided self
adhesive tapes.
Essentially, all self adhesive tapes have the
following components:
1. Backing / Carrier (paper, cloth, film, metal,
foam)
2. Reinforcement (non woven materials, filaments,)
3. Treatment (saturation, priming, release coating,
colouring)
4. Adhesive (natural rubber, silicone, acrylic)
5. Adhesive classification (thermo plastic, thermo
setting)
6. Liner (siliconized paper, polypropylene, polyethylene,
polyester

While selecting self adhesive tapes, you should
also consider its adhesive properties, and the
backing used for the self adhesive tapes.
There are various kinds of adhesive properties
of self adhesive tapes:
:: adhesion,
:: cohesion,
:: wetting, tack,
:: hard,
:: soft, and
:: shear adhesion.
The backing properties of self adhesive tapes
to be considered are:
:: Tensile strength,
:: elongation, tear resistance,
:: abrasion resistance,
:: impact resistance, and
:: printability.

Additionally, you should also consider the
following properties of the self adhesive tape:
:: Aging resistance,
:: UV resistance,
:: heat resistance, and
:: chemical resistance.

Which self adhesive tape is right for you?
While deciding on a self adhesive tape, it is
important to consider the following points:
1. Materials that are being bonded
2. Whether the surface is rough or smooth
3. Is the self adhesive tape for a short tie,
or permanent
4. Whether it is going to be used indoors or outdoors
5. The temperature range
